As the employment in the Electronics industry is expected to grow phenomenally, the need for increasing the numbers of skilled manpower is imminent. However, the present education/skill development system at both formal and non-formal level is not vibrant enough to meet the emerging requirement of the ESDM sector. Hence, in order to create an enabling environment for increasing the number of skill providers to cater to the emerging human resource requirement for ESDM the said Scheme was brought in place by the Government.

Skill Development in Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) sector was approved by Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) under Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, in November, 2013. The scheme would be in operation for four (04) years. The DeitY has also formulated a National Policy on Electronics (NPE 2012) with a vision to create globally competitive electronics design and manufacturing industry to meet the country's needs and serve the international market. The implementation of the policy would significantly enhance the availability of skilled manpower in the ESDM sector.
